Philodendron melanoneuron - Houseplant Homeschool

Philodendron melanoneuron

A beautiful but underrated plant from Ecuador with deeply textured ovate leaves that become more heart shaped as it matures.  A climbing plant that will eventually produce leaves of 50cm or more in size! Given the correct conditions this is a plant that will grow very quickly to quite a considerable size.

One of my favourite things about this species it that it has bright pink roots!

Pot size:  12 cm

Potting Mix: Airy aroid mix with coconut husk and Coir, charcoal, perlite, Orchid bark and worm castings.

Care requirements:

Aim to keep your soil damp not wet or soggy. Your plant will arrive in a very well draining potting mix so one watering a week during the growing season should be fine. If you’re in any doubt only water when the top one inch of potting mix is dry to the touch.

Philodendron melanoneuron is not one for bright direct light. In nature its an understory plant that is used to shade and indirect light.  Don’t be afraid to give it bright light, but avoid direct sunlight unless at the very start or end of the day.

This is a tropical plant so it will look its best given warmth and humidity. The ideal growing temperature I have found to be 20 – 26c°.  Humidity is this plant’s friend: the more you can provide, the happier it will be. Ideally you want to aim for about 60%+. If you don’t have a humidifier then either group your plants together or place pot on a tray of pebbles that are always wet as this will help to create a micro climate around the plant.

A climber by nature, this plant will be happiest if its given some structure to grow on. A prolific producer of bright pink roots at each node, a moss pole would be ideal.

I use a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month at 50% strength.
